Farfalle (pronounced “far-FALL-ay”) is a pasta, also referred to for its butterfly or bow tie-style pasta because of its distinctive shape. The term “farfalle” actually means “butterflies” in Italian. The pasta was first introduced in the 1500s and discovered in Northern Italy in the Emilia-Romagna and Lombardia regions. What Is Farfalle?
Farfalle is an Italian bow-tie-shaped small pasta with curly or straight edges. It is made of semolina, all-purpose flour, and eggs. The dough is then rolled thin and cut into smaller rectangular pieces that measure one and a half by one inch. For the pasta’s distinctive edge ruffles, a pair of pinking shears is employed instead of the knife. Each rectangle is then held across the middle, creating the bow-tie or butterfly shape.
Farfalle can also be purchased dried and is sold in bags and boxes from significant pasta makers (sometimes called bow-tie pasta). Farfalle is cheap and priced similarly to other pasta shapes. It is commonly used for traditional Italian hot dishes like when it is topped with a rich tomato sauce, creamy sauce or simply lemon-garlic sauce with meat or vegetables thrown into it. It’s also used in cold dishes and is made into a pasta salad using vegetables like cucumber, tomatoes, olives, and mozzarella cheese or feta cheese cubes. How to Cook Farfalle
To cook the Farfalle, heat the water to boiling in a large pot. Then add salt according to your preference. The most common form of Farfalle is constructed of semolina and features smooth surfaces with ruffled edges.
