EASY Football Cake Recipe
I’m a huge fan of football—and food. Yeah, I’m the common “don’t watch football but love football food” person. My husband watches football regularly, and I have nothing against it. However, the anxiety of it makes me stressed out SO often.
My daughter has also started watching, much to her father’s joy. It’s now a family tradition that they watch football while I keep my iPad on.
When it’s time for the playoffs or the Super Bowl, I always go into a frenzy of thinking of delicious football-themed food that I can serve. Football-themed food is one of my favorites (see here for some suggestions), and I decided that this year, I wanted to bake a football cake.
I will demonstrate how to make a football cake without a special pan and with just a few easy steps.
How do you create a football cupcake?
Start by making or mixing a cake recipe. I used a cake mix for this, but you could also create a yellow cake, home-cooked chocolate cakes, red velvet cakes, or confetti!
Football only requires one 9-inch or 8-inch round. If there is extra batter, you can bake cupcakes or a round cake to store later (or create double-layer cakes).
To make the cake into a football shape, you just need to cut the middle out of it!
Cut a 1-inch strip from the middle of the cooled cake. Find the center of the cake and cut an inch-wide slice between the middle and above it.
Take off the cake.
Place the two semicircles together to shape the oval/ellipse/football.
Frost Like a Football!
How do you decorate a football cake:
I used chocolate can frosting, but you could make your own chocolate frosting. Frost the exterior on the cake.
To pipe the laces, apply vanilla frosting or even a jar of white icing to make the laces. Put the frosting in the pastry bag and then frost in one of two methods: MANDALÁK: THE 1 JOURNEY THROUGH THE WORLD OF SACRED CIRCLES
- Cut off one corner from the pastry bag, then pipe laces in a round shape without any special tips or
- Use Wilton tip 47 or Ateco 45 pipe flat laces and pipe.
To add a touch of decoration, you could use a grass tip with green-tinted icing as the grass along the edges!
It’s a great idea for a birthday or game day—however you create it, it will be a huge success!

For the football-themed cake, you only need one round cake. Refer to the baking instructions for more alternatives unless you wish to bake a two-layer cake.
Spray one 8-inch or 9-inch round cake pan with nonstick baking spray (use the one with flour). AlternativelyAlternatively, you can coat your cake pan with flour and butter.
Blend the cake batter according to the package directions. Pour half the batter into the pan that you’ve prepared (see the note on the remaining batter). Bake the cake until a toothpick is clean, between 22 and 28 minutes. The cake should cool completely.
A CAR CAKE AND HOW TO MAKE 1 AT HOME ALL THE INFORMATION YOU SHOULD KNOW
Take the cake out of the pan. If necessary, level the cake using a sharp knife.
Cut a 1-inch strip from the middle of the cake. For this task, find the middle of the cake. Move your knife about half an inch. Slice. Repeat this process, moving up about half an inch. Then, you’ll have two semicircles and a long, narrow cake strip. Cut off the rectangle of the cake. The two semicircles should join, and you’ll get a football shape.
Serve cake on serving plates. Frost the cake using chocolate frosting.
Make a pastry bag using a tip like Wilton 47 or Ateco 45 tip. You can put a tiny amount of the white frosting into the pastry bag (about 1/3 of the can). Frost the laces before piping them onto the cake. (You could also do this without a tip. Cut off the top of the pipette bag. The pipe will be round rather than flat.)
If you want, the remaining frosting before piping it around the cake with grass with ips (of34) or Ateco 234).
Keep covered and stored in a loose container until ready to serve.
