It really has it all: amazing food, a fantastic environment, stunning sandy beaches, and a variety of oceans.
The state’s capital city, La Paz Mexico, feels less like a city and more like a big town. It has a welcoming local atmosphere, and the waterfront location gives the city a beach flavor.
While La Paz has all the ideal ingredients to be a top vacation spot, it’s different from the tourist-friendly resorts of Los Cabos. It has remained an undiscovered, overlooked choice for most visitors to Baja Sur.
A visit to Baja offers a more authentic Mexican experience and gives you an understanding of life in Baja beyond the resorts.
We spent two months in La Paz Mexico, sampling the desirable fish tacos, exploring breathtaking beaches, swimming with whale sharks, and riding the Malecon.

We loved everything about La Paz Mexico!
We’re a few city dwellers. We prefer smaller towns or natural surroundings.
However, La Paz Mexico has got to be among the most well-placed cities around the globe! I’ve never visited the town, which is just a few hundred yards away in such pristine nature.
The world’s accurate beaches are right up the road. The city is located towards the stunning Bay of La Paz Mexico and is surrounded by desert mountain layers in The Sierra de la Laguna.
It may be because it’s a small town with a distinct local flavor.
We thoroughly enjoyed getting an insight into the daily life of typical Mexican families, as opposed to the city of Los Cabos, which was filled with tourists.
The usual scenes of La Paz Mexico were of local families walking around with their children, teens skating or fighting fights with a rap on the Malecon, and people running and walking dogs.
The city is primarily catering to its residents and visitors in the way we would like it to be!
We had planned to spend the night in La Paz Mexico for 5 – 7 nights. However, we caught COVID and had to be isolated. We ended up staying within the city area for about 16 days. Of course, we were confined for a portion of the time. However, we think we got a good impression of the city.

Finding La Paz
by air
La Paz Mexico has its international airport, LAP – La Paz International Airport, officially known as the Aeropuerto Internacional Manuel Marquez de Leon.
The airport mainly serves domestic flights within Mexico. If you’re traveling from the east of Mexico (Cancun, Merida, etc.), you’ll likely have to get a ride in Mexico City.
American Airlines runs a handful of flights from cities within the US, including Los Angeles, Phoenix, Dallas, and San Francisco.
The SJD Los Cabos International Airport, located in Los Cabos, is better connected internationally. If La Paz Mexico is one part of a more extensive Baja California Sur trip, you’ll likely get more frequent and inexpensive alternatives at the airport.
GETTING TO LA PAZ AIRPORT IN TOWN
The airport is just 20 minutes from the center of town. Taxis are the quickest and most economical method of transportation.
There’s a taxi station inside the airport. It has fixed prices for various hotels. The cost is paid upfront, and you can transfer your ticket to the area where taxis wait and avoid any unnecessary bargaining or bartering.
Uber and DiDi can be found in La Paz Mexico and supposedly pick you up from the airport. But it’s a delicate arrangement, and frequently, rideshare drivers aren’t allowed to enter the airport. If you’re traveling internationally, you might not have an international SIM card installed yet.
If you’d rather book a trip in advance and not fear about navigating international currency or Spanish once you get there, you could take advantage of a personal airport transfer.
GETTING FROM LOS CABOS AIRPORT TO LA PAZ

- Car rental: I’ll talk about this in more detail later. We recommend renting an automobile for your stay on the road to La Paz Mexico. If you plan on renting your car, you can drop off your vehicle from the terminal in Los Cabos and drive to La Paz. The journey takes about 2 hours along a well-constructed, safe, secure road. Find rentals that are available from Los Cabos airport.
- Private shuttles for large groups, or if you want something quick and easy, arrange an exclusive shuttle service to and from Los Cabos Airport to your lodging at La Paz Mexico. This is an excellent opportunity to work with Terramar Transfers.
- Shuttle shared shuttle Los Cabos Airport provides shared shuttles between the hotel at the airport and hotels in La Paz. La Paz downtown area. It appears relatively new in 2023, and I’m unsure about the service. It seems to be an ideal choice compared to EcoBaja Tours, which has a terrible booking system and poor customer reviews.

In a car
If you’re traveling through Baja California Sur, La Paz Mexico is easy to traverse from other destinations that are well-constructed highways.

Through ferry
It’s possible to get from mainland Mexico to La Paz via ferry from the mainland of Mexico.
Baja Ferries runs routes that connect La Paz and Topolobampo, Sinaloa, and La Paz and Mazatlan, Sinaloa.
Both of these trips are overnight, and you are able to reserve a berth or sleeper.
If you plan to travel throughout Mexico by vehicle, the most efficient way to do so is to move your car from the continental region to the Baja Peninsula.
Ferries start at Pichilingue Port, approximately 20 minutes north of La Paz town.

La Paz has a typical dry Baja California Sur desert climate, with warm summers and hot winters.
Although it rains yearly, the dryest season is between November and April. The perfect season to go is from November to April.
The winter months are more relaxed, with dry and sunny days, blue skies, and comfortable temperatures. The only downside to wintertime is that the temperature of the water may be cold (approx. 20degC / 68degF). There can be strong winds from the north that could disrupt boating excursions.
May to July could be an ideal time to visit La Paz if your main goal is swimming or water sports. However, be aware that temperatures can reach 95°F (35 °C).
The most humid months are usually between August and October. However, it’s not a regular rainy year. Large storms and hurricanes typically occur only every couple of years.
If you’re like us, you’ll prepare your excursion towards La Paz around all the fantastic wildlife encounters you get to. This is the time of year to be aware of:
