Serranos are more prevalent in Mexico than the States; however, if you buy them, consider them a wonderful accessory to your home’s kitchen.
Here’s how they compare against jalapenos and poblanos. Serranos tend to be tinier than jalapenos, but they still pack a lot of punch for their size.

WHAT CAN I SUBSTITUTE FOR SERRANOS?
If you find a recipe for serranos, you could substitute jalapenos without a problem.

Although there are often noticeable differences in the size of jalapenos versus serr=anos, it’s possible to utilize the same amount of jalapeno serrano.
For instance, following the Salsa Verde recipe, starting with half a serrano pepper is recommended. Instead, begin with half the jalapeno. I would not recommend this for those who are sensitive to spicy foods. I would probably not recommend it with hotel chili peppers such as habaneros, but jalapenos and serranos can give you an idea of how hot the pepper is.
WHERE CAN I BUY SERRANOS?
In the produce section, serranos are usually alongside jalapenos. Locating the latter may take several stops, but most stores today have them in stock. I generally place them in a Ziploc bag and keep them in the refrigerator, which will keep them for several weeks.
They’re so inexpensive that I’m accustomed to taking a couple to the supermarket every time I pass them.
